Prof. Rybakowski Appointed Member of The Polish Academy of Sciences
Prof. Janusz Rybakowski from PUMS Psychiatry Department was appointed corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. By decision of PAS General Assembly last December, Prof. Rybakowski was selected for the Medical Section of the organization.
Polish Academy of Sciences member appointments are lifetime honors offered to scientists of good repute with outstanding research accomplishments. The overall number of national members is capped at 350.
Prof. Rybakowski is an alumnus of PUMS and professor of our Psychiatry Department who was head of the department for over 20 years. He was a fellow of the US National Health Institutes at University of Pennsylvania. He was also an active member of the board of Association of European Psychiatrists, President of the Polish Society of Psychiatry, member of 10 other professional societies and several scientific journals editorial boards.
He has published over 600 scientific papers in clinical psychiatry, neurobiology and psychopharmacology, with the main focus on bipolar disorder and therapeutic use of lithium. With his Hirsch index of 56, the highest among Polish psychiatrists, he is the only Polish psychiatrist to be included in the Stanford and Elsevier list of top 2% most-cited scientists in the world.
Prof. Rybakowski is the recipient of Lifetime Achievement Awards by the European Bipolar Forum and by the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry, as well as the Mogens Schou Research Award by the International Society of Bipolar Disorder.
